Fenty Beauty by Rihanna | Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer – No-shine Primer Approved?

Hello beauties,

There’s been some controversy with the Fenty beauty’s Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer. Why? Some people love it and swear by their first born that this is the best matte primer that they tried while others say that is horrible and it’s not mattifying at all.

I have dehydrated/combination skin and now that’s still hot in my country (this is the strangest Fall!) my skin is more to the oily side, so I thought that’s the perfect time to try this primer and see once and for all if this is matte or not!

So I made a little experience. I tried three different foundations and applied the primer in just one side of the face.

A shine-stopping, pore-diffusing makeup primer that smooths the way for better foundation application and longer wear with an instant retouch effect. (Fenty beauty)

In the website we can read that this primer is best paired with the Pro filt’r Foundation, smoothing away the look of pores, visibly evens skin tone and texture, and instantly absorbs shine without feeling dry or chalky. That means smoother foundation application and longer makeup wear.

I didn’t try it with the Pro Filt’r Foundation because I didn’t like that foundation at all, I tried it one time and although when applied looked beautiful, after a couple of hours I felt like I had a mask. It was too heavy and my dry patches were very visible, as my fine lines (didn’t read the post about the Fenty collection, then check here).

Final Thoughts

The Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer has a great smell, like vanilla I think. The price is not the worst ($32) and brings more than an average primer (32mL/1.08oz). The bottle is beautiful and heavy, simple but there’s beauty in simplicity. The product is easy to apply and one/one and a half pump is enough for the entire face.

The product is very lightweight and soft, almost like a moisturizer (a little tacky at first).

I noticed a slight difference between using the foundation with and without this product. With Primer, the skin looks softer and smoother, I also noticed that a more quick application of the foundation and a better finish.

The biggest difference is in my nose. I have dehydrated skin and without exfoliation, the foundation looks always terrible in that area. This primer makes the foundation sit better in that area. It’s true that after a couple of hours the Foundation starts to fade away in the nose, but it lasts a little longer when I have the primer.

Now the face itself, after 4 hours I noticed that both sides (with and without primer) were oily and shining, maybe with a slight difference in the primed side (but nothing too major).

I do think that after 4 hours the side that had the primer was a little better and looked more smooth compared with the side that was not primed.

I also noticed a slight difference in the pores, again nothing to major, but in the side with primer, the pores were a little blurred. I read some comments saying that this primer clogged their pores, but I’m using this for a month and I didn’t notice that, on the contrary, on the side that I didn’t use the primer I noticed more blemishes.

In the end, is this a matte primer? No. I don’t think this should be sold as a mattifying primer (or as a no-shine primer) but as a smooth primer, perfect for dehydrated skin or people that have dry patches and want a primer that smooths, hydrates and prepares the skin to the foundation. I think it also can used in a no foundation day, just to give a boost to your skin.

I learned that there’s three important keys when it comes to the Pro Filt’r Instant Primer:

  1. Apply it with a brush.
  2. Wait a couple of seconds before applying anything after the primer.
  3. Always use a cream moisturizer before, even if you have oily skin.

What about you? What do you think about this primer?
