Fashion before and after April 25 in Portugal

Hello beauties

The Portuguese Girl style is currently a trend, but it’s interesting to note that the style for Portuguese women was quite different 50 years ago, as it was imposed on us.

50 years ago, on 25 April 1974, a revolution reshaped our nation’s destiny, leaving an indelible mark on our history.

The 25th of April is known worldwide as Portugal’s Carnation Revolution. This pivotal moment marked an almost bloodless coup that ended over 40 years of dictatorship in Portugal, the longest-standing in Europe, and ushered in an era of democracy.

During the dictatorship, Portugal had many rules, and laws that couldn’t be broken. Especially on us women.

In the rest of Europe, while the era of hippie clothes, flower power, psychedelic patterns, vibrant colors, skirts, and even punks was in full swing, Portugal experienced a contrasting trend.

The country was in a black-and-white mood, like our clothes.

In the rest of Europe, we could see women in mini-skirts, bell-bottom pants, and platforms, here we could only wear long skirts, pants were for men, and cleavages were forbidden.

What was permitted and was the trend for us Portuguese girls in this time was midi or long belted dresses, low heel shoes, and if there were a pattern, it had to be subtle and in a floral or chess with high neck blouses.

While women were more controlled, men also had some rules in therms of clothes. Usually, the dress code was blazers, camis with XL decolle, bell-botton, or Texas pants.

In terms of bathing suits, we also had rules.

Women could only wear a bathing suit on the beach, pool, or a swim place, and the bathing suit had rules. It could only show 10cm of skin in the back, it needed to have a skirt to cover a minimum of 1cm of the short area. (yes shorts).

In terms of accessories. Women only could use envelop crossbody wallets, and jewelry just pearls and tiny.

With the revolution of April 25, everything changed, and one of the most famous pictures of that day is women getting out on the street wearing pants.
